AFS, the coordinating host organisation, strongly believes in theintercultural learning aspect of an EVS-experience. Therefore, thevolunteer will be living with a volunteer host family, as we believethis is the best introduction to Flemish culture and a greatopportunity to integrate in the local community. Candidates should bewilling to share in the host family's daily life (spend some free timewith them, occasionally join the family on activities outside thehouse, eat together, give a helping hand in the household... ) andshould be motivated to live with and learn about Flemish people ofdifferent ages and opinions. They should also be willing to adapt tothe local eating habits. On the other hand, we guarantee a family thatis interested to learn about your culture and background and thatrespects your values and beliefs. Living in a host family is anexcellent opportunity for both you and the family to broaden yourcultural horizons!
Candidates who are not sure this suits their profile are advised to getin touch with someone who has experience with living in a host family.If you already know you prefer to live independently, please refrainfrom applying for this project.
"De Kruiderie" is a social employment project that wants to reintegratepeople with limited opportunities and/or capacities (because of ahandicap, psychiatric problems, social deprivation… ) into society byoffering them a meaningful employment. The project consist of approx.12 employees (equivalent of 5,4 full times). Depending on theircapacities, they work a number of (half) days per week in the project.They are guided by professionel job coaches and a trajectory coach whoprovides psycho-social support.
The "Kruiderie" produces about 100 different biological herbs forculinary, medicinal and cosmetic use. In spring (March - July), theherbs are grown mainly for sale to private persons. From June onwardswe start growing herbs outdoors for our own processing (dried herbs,herbal syrups and ointments, oils and vinegars… ) and the sale toexternal parties. During the winter months, we are mainly occupied withprocessing the herbs and with making and selling gift packages withherbal products. Sometimes we also accept orders from external parties.The "Kruiderie" is closely related to Loca Labora's biological farm,where biological vegetables are produced on approx. 17 hectares ofland. Sporadically the employees of the "Kruiderij" also help out onthe biological farm. The project exists of 2 different parts
The community Beernem (area 7167 ha) arose from a historical fusion(1977) of three former communities, Beernem, Oedelem and Sint-Joris. On01/01/2001 Beernem had 14.556 inhabitants. Beernem is located 10 km ofthe historical city Bruges. The community is characterised by its ruraland woody environement (f.e. Provincial Domain LippensgoedBulskampveld). The centre of Beernem is quite dense populated and hasmost services (shops, post, library, swimming pool,…). The edge issparsely populated and exists mostly of forests and agriculture.Beernem is easily reachable by public transport and has its own trainstation. We had a nice experience at Loca Labora with Francesco, anEVS-volunteer. When Francesco arrived at the biologicol farm he was atfirst a bit shocked. Not the mentality of the target group, but theintensity of biological farming was different from his expectations.Take away weeds with bare hands between hundreds of rows of vegetables,in rainy dog days or on very hot springdays …. And there it was backagain, this undestroyable weed. The first days were physically very hardfor Francesco. But after a few days he did all his tasks with the mostpeaceful ease as if he had been doing this all his life. Francesco really became one of the group, because he worked with themas an equal. For this work they respected him. They all had theirproblems. But at the land these problems didn't matter! Or were themental devils subconsciously present at every moment? It seemsunbelievable, but for the target group and Francesco with them, theirharvest and vegetables were really important. This was their life,their work and they were proud of it! At the field or in the workingroom they found each other. Sometimes a little bit grumpy, but at leastthe same amount of time there was a very positive atmosphere withtypical workmen jokes at the side.We experience a volunteer as positive if at the end of the period theregrew a real and close connection between the volunteer and the targetgroup.
The Project:Volunteers signify a surplus for each organisation. Volunteers look atthe organisation from a critical distance. They can ask questions aboutrules or things that the staff considers as normal. So this is veryrefreshing. It can stimulate new ideas and projects. Discovering othercultures is also enriching. This is interesting as well for the staffas for the target group of the center. It is an extra impuls to be openand tolerant towards each other and other cultures.
We can offer to the volunteer:
-to work together with the target group at the 'Kruiderie', as an equal
-to learn about the principles of cultivating biological herbs and bringing products to the market- to learn about the concept of social workingplaces- to learn about life, insights in the way of living of the target group
-to discover the culture of Belgium and the way of living here.
The volunteer will mainly be doing manual work together with the targetgroup. Helping to grow, cultivate, harvest, process and sell biologicalherbs. This work offers great possibilities to learn about theprinciples of cultivating biological herbs. Furthermore the volunteerwill experience all these task in the context of social working placesand he/she will be able to develop insights in the targetgroups of LocaLabora.
Until this day we noticed that the volunteers are not able to developa personal project. We are very willing though to offer futurevolunteers the possibility for a proper project with ownresponsibilities. Every initiative or proposition will be welcomed anddiscussed in terms of attainability. There are possibilities for sharedresponsibilities if the volunteer is worked in and has earned therespect of the group. These responsibilities could be: planning anddivision of labour, guiding a subgroup, solving daily technical andorganisational problems, giving psychological and social support to theemployees, quality control.
Working at the Kruiderie:
- Production of herbs (50%)
sowing, strike cutting of herbs and biological plants
potting and repotting herbs
plant herbs in conservatory and outdoors
taking care of the plants
harvesting and drying herbs
- Processing of herbs (30%)
preparing and making herbal products (herbal oils and vinegars, syrups, mixes,...)
- Support in the coaching of th eemployees (20%)
motivate and support the ezmployees
attend group meeting san dweekly discussions
Average of 30 hours a week
·Weekdays hours: from 9 am to 4.30 pm, with coffee- and lunchbreaks. Wednesdays are free

. Saturday and Sunday hours: occasionally for open door days (secondweekend of april and october) or selling weekends, only afterconsultation with the volunteer
Recuperation time can be taken within the week, after consultation with the responsible person.
Holidays are to be discussed with the responsible person.
