A. Project environment: profile of the organisation and local community
The Social Cooperative Villa Maria has its main office in Lenzima, a village of the municipality of Isera situated approximately 9km away from the city of Rovereto, where the Residential Centre is placed. The other services of the Cooperative are located in the Municipalities of Rovereto and Volano; moreover, a part of the activities promoted through the participation of local volunteering regard the entire area of Vallagarina.
The region has a population of 85,700 inhabitants and comprises 17 municipalities, among which the largest one, Rovereto, with 35,136 inhabitants, Mori with 8,918 and Ala with 7,350.
In this area, other than the services offered by the Social Cooperative Villa Maria, a series of services are active that deal with psychophysic disability, most of which focused on the municipality of Rovereto.
Rovereto it is 15 minutes far from Trento and approximately an hour far from Verona by train.
During the Great War, the region was afflux with soldiers and today's landscape provides several reminders of the battles that were fought. In particular, there is the enormous Maria Dolens bell, fused from the bronze of the war cannons, which bells one hundred times every evening as a reminder of the peace that was won.
Rovereto is a very quiet town surrounded by the mountains. There are many vinegars and wineries, as well as some of the finest old castles. However, despite these traditional attributes, money is now being well spent on providing the citizens with recreational activities. There are swimming pools, cinema, bars and the new MART centre which includes a modern library, museum and theatre.
Rovereto's attractions are not as famous as the Italy's trendy and tourist other big cities, but travel to these other areas is relatively easy, thanks to the train network which connects Rovereto to Verona. Plus, the prices of the trains are extremely reasonable and most parts of Italy are reachable within a day's journey.
It should also be noted that for winter and summer sport fans, Rovereto is the ideal place. The Dolomites are only an hour away by car and many of Italy's best ski resorts are on Rovereto's door-step. Moreover, during summer, when Lake Garda is open, there is the opportunity to sail and windsurf on the lake as well as to mountain bike and hike in the lake's surrounds.
However, sport is not the only possible activity in the Rovereto area. Theatre lovers can also be satisfied by Rovereto's Zandonai theatre, which plays international art programs. There is the annual western and eastern International Dance Festival and the renowned Mozart Festival.
The Social Cooperative Villa Maria proposes to work for the psychophysical well-being of the individuals hosted in the service, making the most of their well-being in the first place, as people with needs, rights and dignities as any other citizen. The Cooperative works on the basis of the principles of solidarity and mutual assistance, in order to provide the socio-sanitary, cultural and educational services required to ensure the well-being of the hosts. The Cooperative intends to convey work taking full advantage of the hosts' affective component, giving the utmost attention to the continuous evolution of techno-scientific and operative knowledge achieved in the field of mental handicap and promoting the social integration of the disabled people.
Services of the Cooperative
Situated at Lenzima di Isera, it provides residential hosting 24 hours a day, also in temporary terms, to adults with medium-severe, severe and highly severe psycho-physical handicaps. The hosting activity is completed with rehabilitation, occupational and animation activities; such activities are performed in order to strengthen and, whenever possible, improve remaining capacities in order to maintain each person's autonomy. At present the Residential Centre of Lenzima hosts 84 people with psychophysical handicaps.
The Lodging Communities
The 8 Lodging Communities, distributed over the territory and integrated in the urban context of Rovereto, foresee a hosting modality that is highly centered on personal and social autonomy in the context of a small group. The feeling of belonging and the co-responsibility of managing domestic everyday life, as well as the articulation of space and the opening to the territory, address general goals of such a service towards a socio-rehabilitation model type. At the moment, the Communities guarantee hosting to 55 residents, plus emergency hosting.
The lodging-communities are:
Name Address (Rovereto) Number hosts
Comunità Sole Via Udine 41 a 7
Comunità Arcobaleno Via Udina 41 b 7
Comunità Melograno Via della Terra 19 8
Comunità Melograno Via della Terra 19 7
Comunità Ca'Bella Via Pasqui 59 7
Comunità Ca'Nova Via Pasqui 61 7
Comunità Aurora C.so Verona 36 7
Occasionally, evening outings are organized for the hosts of the Lodging Communities. At the weekends, at days of closed day services and during festivities, the Lodging Community guarantees the service all day. These moments are dedicated to more structured recreational activities, such as: excursions, visits to friends and relatives, participation in socio-cultural offers of the territory, etc. We also seek to ensure moments of rest, where staying at home can be appreciated.
The Communities offer a 365-day per year guaranteed service, supplied by the support and guidance from the operators to the hosts during the course of the day. The operator is present as a support right from the awakening and the morning hygiene up to the moment of sleep, in the evening. He/she supports each host in the rearrangement of common and personal spaces and/or by directly intervening where considered necessary; he/she guides the preparation of meals and grocery shopping; he/she mediates relationships and/or conflicts; facilitates communication, guaranteeing to all a space for self-expression; tutors and protects from possible hazards; organizes the weekly schedule on the basis of individual needs and each host's course.
In the evening, the presence of the operator is expected, who should be ready to intervene whenever necessary. In case of disease of a host, the assistance of the Community is expected.
In any moment, the educator of the Community may contact the Main Office whenever specific intervention is needed in various spheres: administrative, maintenance, medical - nursing, coordination, etc.
The working team of each Community is composed of ten operators whose work is subdivided in structured work-shifts; a responsible educator coordinates each team of operators and also engages in supporting the volunteers, together with the tutor.
The specific educational projects are shared with the Day Centres such as to guarantee coherency and continuity of the intervention.
As far as the educational and psychological aspects are concerned, there is the support of a psychologist of clinical area and of a psicopedagogue.
High autonomy community
Opened in the course of the year 2005, the high autonomy community, called Mimosa, foresees the placement of two hosts with the partial presence - that is, at certain schedules - of the operators. The fundamental objectives reproduced what is already described reguarding the Lodging Community, with a further promotion of personal autonomy. The Community employs a massive presence of volunteering organized in a methodical fashion and of a system of home automation to assist the hosts.
The Cooperative assures daily hosting in two complementing services, allowing access to both the hosts of the residential service (Community and Residential Centre) and of the territory: the Day Centre Foglie di Primavera (main office at Volano, 5km from Rovereto) and the Day Centre La Terra (main office at Rovereto, at the same building that hosts the Communities Margherita and Melograno). These work more specifically on the habilitation and rehabititation of the hosts' functional areas. The foreseen approach, due to the different characteristics of the hosts, is invested both on the occupational and socio-educational fields. Within its structure, different activities are planned, which are always focused on a project level and run on an individual or group level; the approach is taken both on the level of competence acquisition and on the level of awareness and maturation of the functions of oneself.
At the Day Centres are mostly placed the hosts of the Hosting Communities.
Macramè, Service of Promotion and Coordination of the Voluntary Service
The Cooperative is also active at Macramè Service of Coordination of Voluntary Service, and is run by four operators. The tutor of the international volunteers is the person in charge of this Service.
Macramè works both within the Cooperative Villa Maria and on the territory, proposing various iniciatives in collaboration with other disability-dealing services.
It particularly deals with the search for new volunteers to insert in activities with disabled people, sustaining and supporting them when necessary.
It promotes, with the help of the volunteers, leisure time activities directed at the disabled people present in the territory.
It carries out activities of sensibilization, promotion and training on the theme of disability.
B. Proposed activities for EVS volunteers
The volunteer will participate in the educational activities organized in the various services of the Cooperative and will share part of his/her daily life with disabled people placed in the Cooperative.
Depending on the services in which he/she will be inserted the volunteer might assist hosts in educational, rehabilitation or free-time activities with the scope of creating, in synergy with the operators, a welcoming and familiar atmosphere. For example, numerous activities connected to the daily life of the users might be proposed to the volunteer, such as the possibility of cooking or proposing typical dishes of his/her country of origin, showing pictures and newspapers and, if possible, sharing his/her own life habits with the hosts and the operators.
In the various services of the Cooperative the volunteer might propose his/her hobbies or personal interests (painting, drawing, photography, sport activities, etc.), which might result as useful ideas to propose to the hosts in their free-time.
The biggest part of the activities of the Hosting Communities will be concentrated in the schedule 17.00 - 21.00 and will foresee: evening outings, library, swimming pool, walks, activities of house management (recycling, dinner preparation, grocery shopping,…).
At the Daily Centres and at the Residential Centre, the volunteer will be occupied in the schedule 9.00-17.00 and will support the various activities run by the educators and therapists.
Moreover, each year during the Summer, a one-week stay at the seaside is organized, in which the volunteer will be able to participate.
The specific transversal objectives we wish to reach with the international volunteer are:
? To solicit the development of the autonomy and residual capacities of the disabled persons, involving them actively, according to their own possibilities, in the care of themselves and their surroundings. Through the care of themselves and of their own life environment, work can be done on self-perception and on the construction of a self-identity.
? To favour relational capacities, stimulating moments of interpersonal exchange, both in relationships between the volunteer and the host and in a group dimension, where volunteers and operators find themselves mediating relationships between hosts.
? Promoting the integration with the territory, through the involvement of informal resources within the diverse structures and by stimulating moments of participation in the life of the collective.
? Assisting the intervention of the operators present in the structure, as far as activities of assistance, education, rehabilitation and socialization are concerned.
" Learning opportunities offered to the volunteers:
Through the support given by operators and by the responsible person of the Community, the volunteer will be able to experiment himself or herself in the educational role and to learn tools and methodologies used for the care of disabled people.
Moreover, the youngster will be able to move himself/herself within the reality of Rovereto by participating in cultural initiatives promoted in the territory and will have the possibility of weaving positive relationships with the Italian operators and volunteers by learning the language and exchanging customs and traditions.
The international volunteer will become a promoter of an important path of intercultural exchange and we hope that he/she will be able to receive precious tools for personal growth and maturation from the experience acquired from the project.
" Role of the volunteer: the volunteer, after a first period of observation and acquaintance with the Community, will be able to participate actively in the educational activities organized in the different Services and will share part of his/her daily life with the hosted persons. The role of the volunteer will be of strong help to the management of the activities of the community; the working team will try to provide him with the necessary tools and information in order to allow him/her to best experiment himself/herself with relation to the disabled people, offering them additional moments of well-being and emotional responses.
C. Volunteer profiles and recruitment process
The general project for international volunteers foresees the contact with disabled people, therefore a strong motivation in the experimentation in this field is requested. A previous experience with disabled people is not required, but it is fundamental that the volunteer be aware that he/she will work with people that present different sorts of issues. Therefore, a mature and responsible attitude is requested in what regards the tasks that will be entrusted, as well as a predisposition to known how to work within a group and to create positive relationships with hosts and colleagues.
The placement of the volunteers should occur in gradual steps in order to allow the volunteers to acquire the required competences and information and, in the meantime, to allow the establishment of a relationship of reciprocal knowledge and trust.
The activity of direct contact with the disabled hosts foresees an initial phase of acquaintance with the context within which the volunteer will work: the disabled persons, the families, the eventual services within which the disabled are placed, the social services and the territory. This, other than by means of specific formation, will occur through group meetings, individual meetings, documentation and direct observation.
As a prerequisite, it is requested to the volunteer a willingness to enter in contact with the host, in a perspective of acceptance of the limits and difficulties of the latter and in the respect of the spaces for their self-determination. Therefore, it is worth to mention the need of respecting as much as possible the privacy of the hosts.
We are open for collaboration with any sending organization.
E. Risk prevention, safety and protection
In order to prevent risk situations, we will try to guide the volunteer in the activities that will be proposed to him/her.
Specially in the initial period of the experience, the tutor will try to tutor the youngster, guiding him/her through the support of the operator referent in the service within which the youngster is placed, who will try to place him/her, organize his/her schedule, gather possible requests and provide him/her with the minumum information required for the constrution of significant relationships with the hosts.
Furthermore, moments of confrontation and supervision are predicted to take place over the course of the experience, in which the tutor, the responsible person of the service and, whenever needed, the psychologist of the Cooperative will be present.
The constant presence of the operators will be guaranteed, with which the volunteer will work in a climate of collaboration and constant confrontation. After the assurance of the level of autonomy and capacity for self-regulation of the host, initiatives of complete autonomy of the volunteer might be foreseen, with a constant supervision from the responsible operator.
In case of need, a support from the organizing staff will be possible, for advice on specific problems regarding the role of the volunteer (difficulties with the hosts, relations with the collaborators,…)
Moments of encounter with the working teams of different contexts will be guaranteed, in order to discuss matters regarding the development of the activities and in order to share the individual projects of the hosts.
