The Organization

Founded in 1936, the place was originally created as a care centre for unwed mothers and their infants, and over the years has evolved into an organisation offering shelter for abused, abandoned, HIV-positive, orphaned and terminally ill children from birth to fourteen years of age, as well as community based services to vulnerable children in five provinces of South Africa.

With headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa, our activities have reflected the changing needs of our society and we have increased both the quality and quantity of services we provide. In the early 1990’s, Cotlands identified an urgent need to care for children directly impacted by HIV/AIDS. This focus included the establishment of a paediatric AIDS hospice, the first of its kind in South Africa at that time (1996), offering specialised paediatric palliative care 24 hours a day.

What will the participant do?

In addition to general time with the children there could be special projects to enhance the children's education programme:
Finding suitable stories for the age groups; updating and administering the children's resource library; paired reading with the children; homework supervision; baby gym; data capture; packing food parcels for teh community families who are destitute; supervising and accompanying the children on outings and events; running a vacation programme; maintaining memory books for all the children to give them a sense of belonging; sorting and packing the apparatus and toy store room into categories and themese; painting wall murals and outdoor apparatus; assist in the classroom or on the field; assist in extra mural activities; art and music programmes.
