The Organization

The organisation works with mentally disabled people (age 18 - 75) from 3 - 5 in the afternoon in the workshop (manual work, handcraft) and therapeutic groups (music, art, exercise etc)
Vision: To be leader in the field of service delivery to persons with intellectual disability.
Mission: Motivated by the command of the Lord, Alta Du Toit Aftercare serves persons with intellectual disability by means of an extensive programme of safe care and optimal development, to enable them to be and stay, part of the community and family.

The organisation runs 4 hostels with 193 residents.

A multi-disciplinary team (social workers, nurses, therapists) assures that the recidents and day care clients develop to their maximum level of functionning and maintain this level. They are empowered and their quality of life is improved. They are trained in the following areas:
Contract work
Needle work
Paper making
Probation placements in open labour market

Any assistance by volunteers helps us to improve our service to our clients. People from other countries bring extra knowledge and insight from their countries and cultures.

What will the participant do?

Supervision, lending a hand at meal times, assisting with physical exercise, constructive activities, lending a hand with self care (bath, dressing), lendign a hand with personal activities( puzzles, colouring or any number of other tasks)

How will the volunteer be able to benefit from working at this Project?

The volunteer will benefit in term of life skills, first hand knowledge of adults with intellectual disability, care in an institution, a development focussed approach, employment possibilities for adults with intellectual disability and working in a team
