Associazione "Anche noi a cavallo"
"Anche noi a cavallo" is located in Porcia, a small town in the province of Pordenone, in the north eastern part of Italy. Pordenone can be reached by bus or by bicycle (which is available). Its town center is only 4-5 km from the riding school. Even if there are a number of activities in Porcia itself (sports facilities, Italian school for foreigners etc.), most of the social activities take place in Pordenone: cinema, theatre, sport events, exhibitions etc. There are many opportunities for those who look for an active cultural, sportive and social life.
From Pordenone one can reach Venice or Trieste in about one hour by train and Udine and Treviso in half an hour. All these cities are of great historical and cultural interest and are worth visiting. There are also many other minor towns in the Region that can be reached with public transport and which are worth visiting
The riding school is located in a quiet green area, with the closest supermarket at ca. 500 m distance. There is another organization (ANFASS - Pordenone) at only a few km distances where more than 5 European Volunteers are hosted. Especially in the beginning when the language is still a difficulty this is positive and can help the volunteer to get introduced into various activities.
There is a bedroom and bathroom with shower, washing machine etc. The other facilities are used by everyone during working hours.
The organization will provide for language training through a school in Porcia itself where regular classes of Italian for foreigners are held at all levels.
The volunteer will have the possibility to participate to all the voluntary meetings organized by the National Agency.
Usually the arrival of the volunteer in programmed in the beginning of January which gives us the possibility to give particular support since the activities usually slow down by 50% in that month.
Both the language and the specific activities concerning horse training etc. can be intensified in that period so that after a month or so the volunteer can become acquainted with the organization.
Since the volunteer is hosted at the riding school, there are certain rules and conditions that are to be respected such as keeping order in his/her own room but also in the common areas, respect the activities that are being organized at the facilities, even if they are not directly connected to the voluntary activities etc. The rules are being discussed on arrival and generally they only require common sense and responsibility.
The organization will provide for a tutor who will be there for any personal, practical or other problem. The tutor and volunteer will analyze the program and the tasks and discuss them together.
Thanks to the presence of our horses, the living "instruments" of our work, horse riding for disabled people can be considered a global therapeutically practice: it is very stimulating and motivating for both the disabled rider and his/her teacher or assistant. Moreover it is a non-verbal therapy which can be considered an important learning opportunity because it requires close and attentive observation and the development of skills which will always be useful in future life and work.
Animals, disabled people and children in general also require strict discipline and those who work with them will have to be an example for them. This means that a certain discipline is always required in this kind of surrounding and it helps young people learn where to stand and what to do (or not to do!).
All people can find their place in the organization, creating their own space with new proposals and observations. Both the volunteer and the organization will benefit from such in interactive approach.
The volunteer will help with the various activities of the organization, giving extra value to the projects but he/she will not take the place of any of the operators.
Here follow the main tasks:
"help to groom and prepare the horses for the riding sessions;
"help with the daily training of the horses;
"help during the riding lessons by leading the horse;
"participate in the various activities with the disabled people and children, with the possibility of particular responsibilities (for example preparing and organizing games or exercises, grooming the horses together with the disabled people etc.);
"help in the various other activities of the organization (shows, competitions, fairs and other events).
The activities of the organization are basically multi-disciplinary, which means that all the operators and other people interact with each other. The volunteer will therefore have the opportunity to work with different people and to participate to the various meetings concerning programming and follow-up meetings of the activities (as soon as the language skills are sufficient).
The organization tends to make the volunteer feel responsible for his/her tasks, assigning tasks that fit each single person according to his/her personal capacities and attitude. Time and resources will be given in order to develop these personal projects.
The volunteers we would like to host are young people who have just finished high school or who have already had a working experience, maybe in some social field. For us the most important characteristic is motivation: we expect the volunteer to be willing to learn and to be curious about living an important and challenging experience in a foreign country.
Since ours is a mostly outdoor activity with people but also a lot with animals, the volunteer should love animals, have some experience with horses, enjoy outdoor life and physical activity. Moreover, since he/she will be living alone at the riding school, he/she will also have to be prepared to be alone.
Open and transparent recruitment is guaranteed by a lively correspondence through the internet. All contacts up till the present date have been through emails: the volunteers who are interested in our project which they find on the EVS internet list usually visit our website and contact us directly and we reply as soon and as possible.
As for the Sending Organization, it is important that the person in charge is easy to contact and that the correspondence is efficient. The preparation of all the paperwork has to be readily completed, otherwise a lot of time and energy can be wasted and good opportunities for both volunteers and Hosting Organization lost. Our past experiences have all been positive and up till the present date there have not been any problems.
The volunteers at "Anche noi a cavallo" are hosted at the riding school where they have a private room with washing basin. They provide for their own cooking and are completely independent in dealing with their daily management in a controlled and safe surrounding. Since two years there is an alarm system which secures the living area and every night there is a surveillance service. This is out of safety reasons since the volunteer lives alone and we want him/her to feel completely at ease.
Beside the tutor who will give personal support and help the volunteer to know and integrate into the local community, the volunteer can count on the other people who work at the stable. In case of need we have a medical doctor as part of our organization and the public medical facilities are in the direct neighborhood.
We give full instructions and information about living habits, rules to respect and how to use all the appliances so both during her/his free time and during working hours the volunteer will know how to cope with the different situations. The volunteer will receive a booklet about working with horses and disabled people, including the rules to respect at all times at the riding school.
During working hours there are always other people working at the stable so that the volunteer has the possibility to ask any questions or discuss any problems. The tutor is always at his/her disposal for any further questions.
All volunteers go through a preparation period, receiving clear instructions on how to handle the horses according to our working method and how to work with disabled people at the riding school.
Our way of facing the civil workers and numerous foreign volunteers who have worked with us so far has proven to be positive because there have hardly been any crises nor accidents of any kind. We will do our best to keep up this standard and to offer many more volunteers the possibility to live a positive experience at "Anche noi a cavallo".
