Organisation DescriptionThe NGOis dedicated to the well being of young people in West Africa, especially Liberians and Ghanaians. The Organization was founded in 2003 and has been involved inproviding Academic education, Peace building, and Vocational skill trainingprograms for Refugees at the Buduburam Refugee camp.
Aboansan village is about a 30-minute drive from the township of Awutu Berekuwhere the volunteer guesthouse is located. 306 Ghanaian villagers inhabitAboansan village. More than 70% of the villagers are women and children. Thechief of Aboansan village, nana Kwame Korblan and his people including all thesub-chiefs, elders, interest groups and all his people, called on the organisation to extendits programs to the village. They especially invited the project toestablish a school. The people of Aboansan village narrated that there is noschool in the village therefore their children have to walk to Chorcha town andAdabra town about one-hour walk to school. They pointed out that it was verydangerous for young children to walk along through forest because wild animals, snakes, etc may attack them or they may get involved in play that may causeharm for them. As a result of this, many children in the village are not inschool.
The NGO's answer to this was to start the Peace Village. Currently the organisation is turning more energies and resources towards thisproject. They believe this long-term project will have a lasting impact in Ghana asit will provide important facilities and services to several under-resourcedcommunities in the Awutu-Senya District. The project will also serve tostrengthen trust and friendship between West Africans, specifically Ghanaiansand Liberians in Ghana.
The main program for this year will be to work specifically with thechildren of Aboansan, where the Peace village is located, while funding issecured for the construction of the school. The Peace Villagecomplex will include a school, vocational skills-training center, healthclinic, guesthouse and community meeting space for peace and conflictresolution training. The goal is to have the school constructed by June 2009.
The NGO will provide literacy, numeracy peace education and sporting activities to children between the ages of 3 and 9 years in the village. The majority of these children do not attend school.
